Call now for an appointment to have your teeth professionally whitened, and your smile brightened.

Dental Research:

An Indiana University study in 2008 compared several teeth whitening products commonly available in stores. The study found that there are only a few products which whiten teeth without causing teeth sensitivity. This alone is reason enough to see a professional if you are considering teeth whitening. Some products can lead to sensitivity of the teeth, gums and tongue. That is definitely not a good trade off just to get rid of tooth stains.

Downsides to teeth whitening at home include:

  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Gum irritation
  • The inconvenience of multiple daily applications
  • A lack of results

However, an occasional at-home teeth whitening product may not be as harmful to teeth to remove tooth stains from soda and coffee. But the repeated use can be detrimental.

A good way to get the best results is to start with a thorough examination and cleaning at a dental office. A University of Pennsylvania study showed that these steps will improve the overall outcome of teeth whitening.

In 2008 a team of dentists studied the overall satisfaction of patients with their dental treatments after wearing dental braces. They found that most patients were more satisfied with their treatments when their teeth were professionally whitened at the conclusion of their treatment. They noticed that the patients did not seem concerned about the number of individual treatments they received. But most patients showed satisfaction with the overall effect of white teeth. Obviously, no one likes having stained teeth.

Whitening Techniques

Several whitening techniques are available to dentists today. In-office procedures (chairside bleaching) include Zoom whitening and Opalescence®:

Zoom teeth whitening

Zoom teeth whitening is a light activated tooth whitening system and is among the most effective procedures to whiten teeth quickly and easily. This procedure is done in the dental office without any pain or discomfort. Zoom is safe and done under the supervision of a dental professional. The procedure can get teeth 10 shades lighter, making tooth stains a thing of the past. That is a dramatic result compared to risky at-home teeth whitening products.

Opalescence®

Opalescence, unlike Zoom, does not require light activation. Utilizing advanced chemical activation, Opalescence whitens your teeth with no need for illumination. Your dentist may provide you with a system for follow-up treatment that you can use at home for the next two days. Opalescence is often used with custom trays: your dentist can take impression of your teeth that will allow for custom trays to be made for your bleaching procedure. Opalescence is then placed on these trays which are then placed on your teeth.
