Loose Tooth (Call us at 415-240-4973)

Overview: A loose adult tooth is a sign that something is seriously wrong because teeth should be firmly embedded in the supporting bone. Several factors can cause loose teeth but regardless of the cause, the problem must be treated to prevent further problems.

Causes: The usual reason for a loose adult tooth is loss of the supporting bone around the tooth because of periodontal (gum) disease. As the bone melts away the tooth can no longer be held in its bone. Furthermore, If you don't have a good attachment of the gum membrane to the bone, teeth loosen. An improper bite, in which your upper and lower teeth don't align correctly, can loosen teeth. Another reason for a loose adult tooth is from an accident and/or trauma. And habitually gnashing and clenching your teeth--a stress-based reflex called bruxism--not only wears down the tops of teeth but also loosens them

Treatments: If your loose teeth are caused by gum disease, your dentist may perform a scaling and root planting procedure. All of the bacteria are removed from your affected teeth and the surface is smoothed to encourage gum regrowth.

If your loose teeth are caused by trauma, your dentist may treat the problem by splinting. A thin steel wire is used to stabilize the teeth and add more strength. The loose teeth are attached to firmly entrenched teeth so there is no need to remove them. You also won't have to deal with feeling the tooth move or experience any more pain from chewing foods that goes along with wobbly teeth.

When all else fails, your dentist may recommend pulling the teeth or tooth and supplying you with dentures or a bridge or a dental implant so that you don't walk around with missing teeth. This is usually a last resort when all other treatment methods fail. So the key is preventing this from ever being a choice your dentist has to make.
