Chipped tooth (Call us at 415-240-4973)

Overview: Unfortunately, in spite of even the best dental care and hygiene practices you adopt, trauma to your mouth can cause a host of problems from a chipped tooth to a completely broken tooth.

Treatment: If you have a chipped or a broken tooth, it is a good idea to visit your dentist promptly, even if you are in no discomfort. Teeth may fracture for a variety of reasons, including cavities, congenitally weak enamel, brittle teeth due to root canal treatment or non-vital pulp, and trauma. Fracture lines within a chipped tooth may continue to increase as well, creating greater risk of further chipping or discomfort. Treatments for fractured teeth range from filing and reshaping to placing new fillings, crowns, or veneers. Extensively fractured teeth may require root canal treatment or, rarely extraction. If a tooth has fractured off at the gum line, it may still be savable!

If your tooth is minimally damaged, the dentist may be able to file and reshape the tooth. If your tooth is badly damaged or there is pain when you chew food or drink anything hot or cold, then your chipped or broken tooth may need more than simple filing or reshaping. Foregoing a treatment now will cause more problems later. Call your dentist to fix the problem as soon as possible. Treatment options for badly damaged teeth include filing, bonding, crowns, root canal and sometimes extraction.
